Moon appears dim just before the eclipse. Why?

A lunar eclipse occur when earth lies between sun and moon and shadow of earth falls on moon. The light reflected from moon has been refracted by earth’s atmosphere. These refracted light appears raddish  so the moon appears dim just before the eclipse.
